The Reds' talisman celebrates the 10th anniversary of his senior debut this weekend and the midfield dynamo has in that time established himself as one of the best players in Europe.

With Gerard now 28 it has been suggested he is at the peak of his powers, but Benitez insists the England international can get even better.

"It is difficult to find a player who has spent 10 years at one club, especially now with the way football has gone," said Benitez.

"And for him to do it in a top side is even more difficult. But Steven has the right mentality.
