Real Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez has claimed he would make Xabi Alonso his primary target if he were to be elected. It is common for club's presidential candidates in Spain to reveal the players they would go for if elected and Perez has chosen Alonso as his main summer target should he get the nod at the Bernabeu.
The Spanish international midfielder has been an almost ever present in the side this season and boss Rafa Benitez would be unwilling to sanction a move for the player, unless the money was too good to turn down and he had already lined up a replacement.
Last summer he was prepared to sell Alonso to Juventus if they came up with £16m as he was then going to spend that on bringing Gareth Barry to the club but that move eventually collapsed with Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri saying Alonso was too slow.
If a similar deal were to emerge this summer then Benitez may be tempted again.
