Gary Ablett praised the performance of French striker David Ngog despite a couple of squandered chances in the reserves' goalless draw with Manchester United on Tuesday. The 19-year-old had a golden opportunity to put the second string in front in the first half but handled the ball when he could have headed beyond Tomasz Kuszczak.
Despite failing to add to his reserve brace of two weeks ago, Ngog looked lively and showed the kind of potential required to add to his nine first-team appearances to date.
Ablett said: "I thought David did very well against two boys who were eager to impress. He used his body well and set up play.
"He had two chances. There was one in the first half that he could have headed but handled - though it was a really good run and a great ball from Dani Pacheco. Then he was unlucky with a volley in the second half."
The 0-0 scoreline keeps Liverpool in eighth position (out of 11) in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North, though Ablett has been pleased with his side's attitude in recent weeks.
He said: "We picked up where we left off against Middlesbrough two weeks ago. It was a very even game between two good footballing sides. We both tried to get it down and play, so I think a draw was a fair result in the end."
Most of Liverpool's attacking play in Altrincham involved the impressive Nabil El Zhar, who looked full of confidence after a season punctuated by first-team cameos.
Ablett added: "Nabil was very lively. He looked a constant threat and that was probably one of his best performances for us this season. He was tiring towards the end and lost possession a couple of times, but on the whole he can be really pleased."
