The Reds stay top

Wanderes were left punch-drunk in their Boxing Day clash against Liverpool at Anfield. Gary Megson’s side went behind to Albert Riera’s 26th-minute opener after the Spanish winger volleyed home Steven Gerrard’s corner at the near post in a one-sided contest.

The Premier League leaders dominated throughout and Robbie Keane doubled their advantage with a well-taken finish on 53 minutes. It took Keane only five minutes to get himself on the score sheet again as he latched onto a Yossi Benayoun through ball and drove past Jaaskelainen to put the game beyond doubt and stayed top in the Premier League.

The Reds maintained their one-point lead over Chelsea, which had briefly taken top spot earlier in a full Boxing Day program by beating botttom-placed West Bromwich Albion 2-0.
