Goal: Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus)
The Italian international levelled the aggregate scores after 19 minutes in Turin following a sublime exchange of passes with David Trezeguet. Iaquinta deftly flicked a long ball to the his strike partner, raced on to the Frenchman's perfect angled pass and applied a sublime clipped finish past Petr Čech.
Save: Leo Franco (Club Atlético de Madrid)
The Argentinian goalkeeper kept his team on level terms on the night with a superb one-handed save at his near post, deflecting a driven cross from Hulk beyond the reach of the hitherto perfectly-poised Lisandro in the centre.
Player: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC)
What better way to mark your 100th appearance in UEFA club competition than by scoring twice against the nine-time European champions. That is exactly what Liverpool's talismanic captain Steven Gerrard did at Anfield on Tuesday against Real Madrid, his second goal, a side-foot half-volley, was his seventh in this season's competition, taking him level with Miroslav Klose atop the scoring charts.
Team: Liverpool FC
Madrid arrived on Merseyside knowing their opponents had only won two of 12 matches at home in Europe against Spanish opposition. However, they were forced on to the defensive from the off and, after Fernando Torres had given Liverpool the lead, the hosts never looked back, going on to inflict Madrid's heaviest defeat in UEFA Champions League history.
Record breaker: FC Bayern München
The German side's 7-1 defeat of Sporting Clube de Portugal completed the record margin of victory and aggregate scoreline (12-1) in a post-group stage knockout tie in the competition, eclipsing Olympique Lyonnais's 10-2 defeat of Werder Bremen in 2004/05.
Debut: Thomas Müller (FC Bayern München)
The 19-year-old had only been on the field two minutes when his marauding run down the right ended in Klose heading back across goal for Mark van Bommel to score Bayern's fifth. Better was yet to come, though, as in added time Müller capped a vibrant debut in UEFA club competition by finishing off a goalmouth scramble following a corner.
Quote: Paulo Bento (Sporting Clube de Portugal)
"Now we have to analyse this match and see what went wrong. Many players had major problems in both legs, and we've really learned the hard way."
The Sporting coach proves the master of understatement, the "problems in both legs" apparently referring to the home and away matches, not troublesome limbs.
Number: 5
Madrid's exit at Anfield was the fifth time in as many seasons that Los Merengues have been eliminated in the first knockout round.
