Liverpool's other great title battles

1987-88

Liverpool got off to a flier and were not to be caught, with John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley leading the way. Fergie was in his first full season at Old Trafford.

1979-80

Bob Paisley's Liverpool fought off Dave Sexton's United, who came with a strong run that proved just too late. They closed the gap to two points at the end.

1963-64

Bill Shankly's Anfield dynasty got under way, with his first title win. They eventually won by four points from Matt Busby's United after a season-long battle.

1946-47

Liverpool's triumph came after a slow start. Boss George Kay came head to head with a young Matt Busby. They beat United on May 3 and took the title by a single point.
