History boys: Liverpool fans remind the great Real Madrid of their own history during the English club's crushing victory at Anfield
Liverpool have drawn 0-0 in the first leg of their European Cup semi-final at Anfield and now face a mighty Bayern team in the Olympic Stadium. Kenny Dalglish limps off after just nine minutes but young Howard Gayle comes on and runs the Germans into the ground. Ray Kennedy grabs Liverpool's goal as they progress on the away goal rule. Then beat Real Madrid in the final in Paris to lift the trophy for the third time.

Liverpool are by now established as England's best team but this marks the end of one era - and the beginning of another. Keegan confirms his position as the country's premier striker as Liverpool amble to victory in the FA Cup Final and Newcastle are - as so memorably put by commentator David Coleman - 'undressed'. But days later manager Bill Shankly announces his retirement and Bob Paisley takes over. Liverpool win four European Cups in the next 10 years.

Already crowned champions of England and with the League Cup in the bag too, Joe Fagan's Liverpool head to the Eternal City to play a European Cup Final against a team playing in their own stadium. Surely they can't pull it off? But the scores are level after extra-time and goalkeeper Bruce Grobelaar's wobbly legs and Alan Kennedy's iron nerve ensure that the Scousers triumph against the odds.
A night that leaves people wondering why football can't always be like this. Liverpool are talented, frustrating, erratic and exciting. Kevin Keegan's Newcastle are desperate for the title. The visitors seem destined to win, but they don't. Collymore scores at the death. Keegan can't watch.
So good that it was included in full in the Liverpool end-of-season video. Liverpool are in their prime under Kenny Dalglish and are playing opposition that are sick of the sight of them. Aldridge, Barnes and Bearsdley have magic in their boots and nobody who is there will ever forget it.

4. Liverpool 3-1 Saint-Etienne (March 1977)
Six minutes from the end of this European Cup quarter-final, Liverpool are 2-1 up but drawing 2-2 on aggregate - and the French side have an away goal. Then supersub David Fairclough latches on to a long ball and plants it in to the net at the Kop End. Those who were there tell how the ground shook as Fairclough played his way in to Liverpool folklore. Two months later they were European champions for the first time.
3. Liverpool 7-0 Tottenham (September 1978)
Liverpool are determined to reclaim their league title from Brian Clough's upstarts at Nottingham Forest and what an early marker to lay down. Spurs have Villa and Ardiles in their team but Liverpool have Dalglish, McDermott (right) and Heighway. They are unstoppable. Terry McDermott's headed goal - the seventh - has rarely been bettered at Anfield.

A defining moment in Liverpool's history. The whole of Anfield locates to Rome for a week to see if Paisley's team can bring home the European Cup. At 1-1 it's tight but Tommy Smith heads Liverpool ahead and then Phil Neal scores from the spot after Berti Vogts hauls down Kevin Keegan. Without this one there may not have been the other four...
Liverpool are nowhere near the best side in Europe but - against a background of 15 years of Manchester United dominance - they are desperate for something to remind the world that they still exist. Losing 3-0 at half-time to the Italians in Istanbul, Rafael Benitez's side are staring at embarrassment but a Steven Gerrard header early in the second half gives them hope and before long they are level. As Milan wilt, Liverpool find heroes everywhere. Smicer, Dudek, Carragher, Alonso... By the time penalties roll around Milan are spent. Liverpool are champions of Europe. Again.
