FIFA has confirmed that 11 official bids have been made to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.Nine bids were made to host the tournament in either year, from England, Australia, USA, Russia, Japan, Mexico, Indonesia and a joint bid involving Holland-Belgium and Portugal-Spain.While Qatar and South Korea have applied to host just the 2022 showpiece. All of the applicants now have until December 11 to submit their bidding agreements, with FIFA's 24-man executive committee deciding who will host each tournament in December 2010.
Successful hosts of the World Cup must be able to meet specific criteria.
These include having at least 12 stadiums with minimum capacities of 40,000, with one arena able to hold 80,000 people or more nominated to stage the final.Next year's World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, with the 2014 global extravaganza due to be in Brazil.
