Kate Perry honoured with award by mistake

Pop sensation Kate Perry was presented with the international song of the year award for "I Kissed A Girl" at a French music award show, but it turned out to be a mistake.

The host of the NRJ Music Awards which took place in Cannes, announced at the end of the show on Saturday that there had been a mistake in vote-counting and that Perry was not the winner.

Awards were handed out based on results of audience votes on NRJ’s website in the weeks leading up to the awards ceremony and finalised votes revealed that Rihanna had won instead for her hit song "Disturbia".

"We are terribly sorry, but we made a mistake. It wasn't Katy Perry who was supposed to pick up the Best International Song, but Rihanna with 'Disturbia'. We hope Rihanna and Katy Perry won't be too upset and we apologise for all the fans who voted for them. The wrong name was put in the envelope, said host Nikos Alliagas.

"We're really terribly sorry. Katy Perry will have to give her (award) to Rihanna."

It must have been a great disappointment for the American singer as this was her first award. But Perry finally got her 'first award' when she won the best international album prize for "One Of The Boys" later that night.

In other categories, the international female artiste of the year went to Britney Spears while Enrique Iglesias was named top international male artiste. The Pussycat Dolls were crowned best international group. .
