Puppy love the latest tactic of Nigerian web scammers

If only the naive can be "sold a pup", then how gullible are the more than 100 peoples across Australia who have paid African shysters hundreds of dollars each for pooches that don't even exist?According to reports the perpetrators of the Nigerian letter scam have developed a more sophisticated ruse that preys on the emotion attached to the purchase of a pet.

A classified advertisement is posted on a free website by a seller who is regretfully parting with their pet because of travel plans. Up-front payment is required and it's not possible to see the animal before purchase. The local authority said despite warning signs scores of people were falling for the scam, transferring $300 to $600 for an animal that never arrives. One person paid $2000.
